“Mummy, are you Ridha’s friend?”
Tonight at bedtime, my daughters and I were going through the motions of our bedtime routine. We were reading our storybook, when suddenly my eldest daughter, Ridha turns to me and says, “Mummy, tum Ridha ki friend ho?” which translates to: “Mummy, are you Ridha’s friend?” [She uses third person a lot when she speaks] My heart melted for my little girl. Of course I am, I’m your best friend, I explained to her in our language [Urdu].
I tried to retrace her thought process of why she asked me this question in the first place. We were reading one of her favorite books before bed, “Fancy Nancy Tea For Two“. In the story, Nancy visits her best friend Bree’s house for a tea party. [I sometimes read these stories to my daughters by translating them to Urdu, so that they can understand them.] When we got to the part of the story where Nancy and Bree have an argument, Ridha turned to me and asked me this question. But the way she asked me is what truly got me, because she was so hopeful that I would say yes.
I couldn’t help but wonder how long this will last…my friendship with my daughters.
I know there will be times when our friendship will be tried and challenged. Sometimes it may weaken. Sometimes parenthood will step in and take the place of friendship.
But for now, I’ll let myself enjoy their inclination to be with me, play with me, eat with me, sit with me, read with me, and most of all chat with me.
What are some things your child has asked you? I’m always amazed by their little minds.
Lovely post. I think the same about my daughter. I love how close we are & i so hope it lasts as we get older xx
I feel the same way, as most parents do I’m sure. Thanks for commenting!
How lovely. I’m always wondering what is going in behind their thoughts and words. It’s good to think it through. I wish you many years of friendship #dreamteam
Thanks for your lovely comment. I wish for the same π
Mine often tells me Im her best friend although when she’s in the hormonal stages I probably won’t be #thesatsesh
That’s so sweet, lucky you! Thanks for reading π
Lovely positive post- treasure those moments! #thesatsesh
Thanks for reading!!
#thesatsesh When my son says little things that make me giggle or laugh I make them my Facebook status, just so that I can remember them for years to come (plus the timeline is a lovely reminder of the things he said years a go)
That’s a great idea! I like to use the blog as a memory storage system too!
I guess they are tools for social media and memory / right?
Lovely post. I’d like to pretend that I’ll be best friends with my daughters forever, but reality is that I’m their mother and in their teens they’re probably going to hate me more than like me, let’s face it. I’m holding on to the precious time though when they really need me still and want to hang out with me. #DreamTeam
I know exactly how you feel. Even I wasn’t BFF with my mom until I started having kids. Thanks for reading! π
With the “tween” and teen years looming, my friendships with my daughters will likely change. I love that they want to spend a ton of time with me right now, and I hope they continue to understand that I will always have their best interests at heart.

Enjoy your time with them now, time flies too quickly π¦ Thanks for reading π
I’m going through my third pregnancy at the moment, and my eldest has obviously observed two pregnancies. He always asks me at the moment “are you ok? Do you need some help?” It is just adorable and he is only 3. It makes my heart melt. The thing is is if I say yes I need help then he’s more than happy to! #fabfridaypost
